KL cops bust Yemeni begging syndicate exploiting kids to draw sympathy


KUALA LUMPUR:A begging syndicate, masterminded by a Yemeni man, was busted following a raid in Klang, Selangor and Bukit Bintang.

Several children forced to work as beggars were also rescued.

The operation, codenamed "Ops Pintas Khas", was conducted by Bukit Aman CID Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) division (D3) at about 10pm on Tuesday (Jan 14).

Bukit Aman D3 principal assistant director Senior Asst Comm Soffian Santong said eight Yemeni nationals - six men and two women, aged between 21 and 30 years old - were detained during the operation.

"One of the men detained is the syndicate's mastermind.

"We believe they have been active since September last year

"They also exploited children to be used as beggars," he said when contacted on Thursday (Jan 16).

SAC Soffian said police also rescued seven children aged between one and 16 years old.

"The syndicate would conduct their begging operation in groups from 6pm until 3am.

"They collected between RM2,500 and RM3,000 daily," he said.
