Abang Jo: Petronas-Petros resolution paves way to make Sarawak and Malaysia an energy hub

KUCHING: Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) will serve as the sole gas aggregator in Sarawak without disrupting the gas supply to consumers, including investors, said Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

The Premier also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for announcing that issues related to gas distribution rights between PETRONAS and Petros had been resolved.

"(His) statement, among others, clearly recognises and acknowledges Petros as the sole gas aggregator in Sarawak," he said on Wednesday (Jan 15).

The Premier said the Sarawak government and Petros would collaborate with the Federal Government and PETRONAS to ensure this outcome.

Abang Johari said the Sarawak government also appreciated the roles of the Federal Government and PETRONAS in resolving the issue.

He added that this resolution would enhance strategic collaborations between all parties to drive efforts to make Malaysia - particularly Sarawak - an energy hub.

"This cooperation will also enhance Malaysia's global competitiveness in attracting investments, technological research, and new industries, particularly petrochemical derivatives, aligned towards creating high-paying jobs and the economic growth of the nation," he added.

On Tuesday (Jan 14), Anwar said Putrajaya recognised that Petros was established to enable Sarawak to pursue its own gas exploration and distribution initiatives.

He also noted that the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974 applies nationwide and is accepted by both the Sarawak government and Petros.

At the same time, the Sarawak Gas Distribution Ordinance 2016 does not supersede the PDA or the Federal Constitution, and PETRONAS' position remains unaffected, he added.
