Heated over cricket: Foreign worker stabbed while asleep over Nepalese match

MELAKA: A dispute between two foreign workers over a Nepalese cricket match turned violent, resulting in the stabbing of a 28-year-old man at a workers’ dormitory of a poultry processing plant in Jasin here.

Melaka acting police chief, Senior Asst Comm Datuk Md Nazri Zawawi said the 23-year-old Nepalese suspect, who was also injured in the altercation, attacked the victim while he was sleeping at about 6am on Jan 9.

“The argument started when the two men were discussing the outcome of a cricket match held two months ago in Kathmandu, Nepal,” he said on Saturday (Jan 11).

SAC Md Nazri said both were fans of different cricket teams, and one of them was unhappy that his team had lost the match.

"Frustrated over the result, both the suspect and victim had a heated argument earlier before the former allegedly stabbed his countryman with a kitchen knife while he was asleep at the dormitory in Pondok Kempas in Jasin, here," he said.

SAC Md Nazri said other workers who were in the dormitory attempted to stop the attack that caused injuries to the suspect.

The suspect, a lorry driver who has been working in Malaysia for the past four years, was detained on the same day.

The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous harm with intent using a weapon.

The victim is currently warded at the intensive care unit at Jasin Hospital.
