Malaysian appointed to world body on chemical weapons


PETALING JAYA: Malaysian chemical weapons-related expert Dr Raja Subramaniam (pic) has been appointed as an expert to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons’ (OPCW) scientific advisory board, says Wisma Putra.

The Foreign Ministry said his appointment is for a three-year term, from today to Dec 31, 2027.

The ministry said Raja has over 23 years of specialised expertise in chemical weapons-related matters. He holds a doctorate in Chemical Weapons Analysis from the National Swedish Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear Defence Research Institute.

He is currently serving a second term as the undersecretary of the Malaysian National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention, which operates under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The ministry expresses its appreciation to the OPCW director-general and the international community for their recognition of Malaysia’s unwavering commitment to global efforts aimed at eliminating chemical weapons,” said Wisma Putra.

The scientific advisory board comprises 25 independent experts from OPCW member states.They provide specialised advice to the OPCW director-general, based in The Hague, on scientific and technological developments relevant to the implementation of the United Nations Chemical Weapons Convention.
