Malaysian appointed to OPCW Scientific Advisory Board

PETALING JAYA: The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has appointed Dr Raja Subramaniam, an expert on chemical weapons, to its Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), says the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

In a statement on Tuesday (Dec 31), the ministry said his three-year term would start on Jan 1, 2025, and end on Dec 31, 2027.

It said Subramaniam has over 23 years of specialised expertise in chemical weapons-related matters and holds a Doctorate in Chemical Weapons Analysis from the National Swedish Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear (CBRN) Defence Research Institute.

"He is currently serving a second term as the Undersecretary of the Malaysian National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention (NACWC), which operates under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The SAB comprises 25 independent experts from OPCW Member States, serving in their personal capacity, providing specialised advice to the OPCW Director-General, which is based in The Hague, on scientific and technological developments relevant to the implementation of the United Nations Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

"The SAB meets once a year, or as and when required by the Director-General," it said.

The ministry expressed its gratitude to the OPCW Director-General and the international community for their recognition of Malaysia's unwavering commitment to global efforts aimed at eliminating chemical weapons.
