KUCHING: The Sarawak Veterinary Services Department is implementing control measures at pig farms in Tebedu district to prevent African Swine Fever (ASF) from spreading, says Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi.
The state Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister said the action was taken after ASF was detected at Mongkos in Tebedu on Nov 29.
"Other districts in Sarawak are still free of ASF," he said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 12).
Dr Rundi also assured that the supply of pork in Sarawak is sufficient for the coming Christmas celebration and safe for consumption.
He said the ASF virus only infects swine and not humans or other livestock.
Clinical symptoms of ASF include a high mortality rate, fever, breathing difficulty, loss of appetite, skin ulcers and swelling.
"If farmers notice these symptoms, they should report it immediately to the nearest veterinary office," Dr Rundi said.
He reminded farmers to step up biosecurity measures at their farms, such as vehicle and foot dips and strong perimeter fencing.
Farmers should also control the movement of livestock, vehicles and individuals in and out of their premises.
"The transfer of live pigs is prohibited without a permit from the Veterinary Services Department," he added.
