Sessions Court sets April date for case of ex-preacher accused of impersonation

SEREMBAN: The Sessions Court here has fixed 16 April next year for the remention of a case involving a 45-year-old former freelance preacher facing three charges of impersonating an advocate and solicitor.

Judge Amran Jantan made the ruling after defence lawyer Ahmad Zahid Abu Hashim said he needed time to review the documents related to the case.

He told the judge that he had only received the documents from the prosecution team earlier in the day.

The accused, Muhammad Syafiq Stewart Abdullah, claimed trial on Oct 29.

He allegedly deceived three individuals into believing that he was a qualified advocate and solicitor.

The alleged offences were committed around 10am on 18 November 2021, 2 March, and 2 June 2022 at the Seremban 2 court complex.

Muhammad Syafiq was charged under Section 416 of the Penal Code, which is punishable under Section 419 of the Code.

Offenders can be jailed for up to seven years or fined or both upon conviction.

When Judge Amran asked deputy public prosecutor Ashrof Kamarul if he had any objection to the defence's request for the next mention to be set three or four months later, he said he had none.

The accused is out on RM15,000 bail.
