Communications and Multimedia Bill 2024 passed in Dewan Rakyat

KUALA LUMPUR: The hotly debated Communications and Multimedia (Amendments) Bill 2024 (CMA) was passed in the Dewan Rakyat via a bloc vote on Monday (Dec 9).

59 MPs voted in favour, 40 were against and one one abstained. Meanwhile, 122 MPs were absent during the vote.

Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) said the Opposition would like to go for a bloc vote, with 15 MPs supporting it.

A dispute would need the support of at least 15 MPs for a bloc vote to be called in the House.

A total of 24 MPs have participated in the debates on the Bill.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil tabled the Bill for the second and third readings on Monday (Dec 9).

The amendment Bill was tabled for the first reading on Dec 2 along with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (Amendments) Bill 2024 (MCMC).

One of the key amendments redefines the term “offensive” when committed through a content or network service provider to “grossly offensive”.
