Cancer survivor graduates as top student in class


CYBERJAYA: Cancer survivor Muhammad Asif Shaik Saffarudin is a step closer to achieving his ambition of becoming an engineer after graduating as the top student in his class with a Bachelor of Engineering in electronics, majoring in Telecommunications from Multimedia University (MMU) on Saturday.

Muhammad Asif was diagnosed with early acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) when he was only 10 years old and was declared cancer-free when he was 17.

The 23-year-old was conferred the chancellor’s award during MMU's 25th convocation ceremony at its Cyberjaya campus.

The university's chancellor award is the highest accolade presented to the top student of MMU'S graduating class. It recognises outstanding academic achievements, significant extracurricular contributions, and leadership.

Reflecting on his award, he attributed his success to his mother who gave him constant encouragement despite enduring challenges.

In the same ceremony, Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, and Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah were also conferred Honorary Doctorate Degrees of Management in recognition for their remarkable contributions to the field.

Some 3,657 graduates are set to receive their diploma, Bachelor’s, Masters and Doctorate scrolls during the convocation ceremony from Nov 7 to 9.
