Govt to support northern MSMEs bordering Thailand, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will focus on supporting micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the northern states bordering Thailand.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this focus was to ensure MSMEs could benefit from the increased trade with Thailand following the opening of a new border checkpoint on July 11.

As of June, he said the government had already approved financing for MSMEs in Kelantan (RM400mil), Kedah (RM287mil) and Perlis (RM45mil).

He announced the financing had been provided by the government’s “PowerUp 10K” campaign, which aims to mobilise RM15bil this year for MSMEs.

"This is ensure everyone, even our smallest businesses, are able to take advantage of this expected economic boom betweent he two countries," he said during Prime Minister Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (July 14).

He added that development of the new special economic border zone (BEZ) between Malaysia and Thailand would not only boost trade between the two countries, but also between Malaysia and other Asean countries.
