Suspect in fatal Kinabatangan machete attack gives up


KOTA KINABALU: A foreign national wanted in connection with a murder emerged from hiding and surrendered himself 48 hours after he allegedly slashed his colleague to death at a workers’ hostel in Kinabatangan.

The man, in his 40s, surrendered to villagers in Ladang Lokan Baru, Telupid, at around 5.30pm on Monday (Dec 2) and was handed over to the police at 8pm.

Acting Kinabatangan police chief Asst Supt Mohd Zulfikar Abd Salam said they arrested the suspect some 12km from the murder scene.

“The suspect is now at the Telupid police station for further investigation,” he said on Tuesday (Dec 3).

Police seized a 37cm-long machete believed to be the weapon used in the attack, which left a 30-year-old man dead and a 24-year-old injured.

The case is being investigated for murder and causing grievous hurt under Sections 302 and 326 of the Penal Code.

ASP Zulfikar thanked the villagers for helping to secure the suspect and urged the public not to speculate about the case on social media.

The incident occurred on Saturday (Nov 30) after an argument that ended with the deceased being fatally slashed on the neck.

Another man who tried to intervene was stabbed in the chest but survived.

Investigators said the three men had attended a birthday party at the plantation the night before the incident. Police are continuing their probe.
