Thieves steal empty gold bar ATM in Ampang Jaya, three arrested

KUALA LUMPUR: A gang of thieves stole a gold bar ATM from a supermarket in Ampang Jaya, only to find that it had been emptied beforehand.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Azam Ismail stated that a report on the incident was received on Nov 23.

"The whole machine was stolen, but there were no gold bars inside as it had been emptied beforehand. Losses on the machine have been estimated to be around RM60,000," he said.

A series of arrests were made between Nov 26 and 30, during which three men aged between 17 and 41 were apprehended in Ampang Jaya and Kajang.

One of the three suspects tested positive for drugs. Police checks showed that one of the men had 54 prior criminal offences with three outstanding warrants.

"Investigations showed that the group would target gold bar ATMs at supermarkets and hire a lorry driver to transport the machine away.

"Two suspects have been granted police bail, while the third has been remanded until Dec 4," he said.
