Kelantan cops to fly in supplies to nine relief centres cut off by floods

PASIR MAS: Police helicopters will be used to deliver food supplies and necessities to nine temporary relief centres (PPS) cut off by floods.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said there are seven relief centres in Pengkalan Kubur, Tumpat and one each in Lubuk Jong and Rantau Panjang, all inaccessible via land routes.

"Frequency of deliveries will depend on need and we will likely ask the fire department's air unit to help if there aren't enough police helicopters," he said at a press conference at the disaster operations control centre at the Repek police station here on Saturday (Nov 30).

Mohd Yusoff added a police helicopter arrived in Kelantan at 6pm Friday (Nov 29) along with heavy vehicles from the Armed Forces and others, as announced by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said the helicopter had been used several times already – once to transport a patient to the hospital and to deliver food to flood relief centres.

"We will also make another food delivery today to the Lubok Jong flood relief centre," he said.

Mohd Yusoff added that vehicles with an unladen weight of five to seven tonnes brought into the state will be on standby to transport candidates for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination which starts on Monday (Dec 2). – Bernama
