Anwar lauds Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire


PUTRAJAYA: The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon has the potential to prevent further attacks and hostilities, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister Malaysia said Malaysia is awaiting further details on the agreement but viewed the ceasefire as a positive step to resolve the conflict.

"The ceasefire seems to be a step in the right direction but certain concerns raised by various parties must be closely monitored.

"The most critical aspect is the ceasefire itself – it will prevent further attacks or invasions," Anwar said at a press conference at the Festival of Ideas (FOI) at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) here on Thursday (Nov 28).

The ceasefire was announced Wednesday (Nov 27) by US President Joe Biden, following an agreement brokered by the United States and France, which both Israel and Hezbollah accepted.

Biden said that fighting along the Israel-Lebanon border would cease at 4am local time.

Commenting further, Anwar expressed concerns not only about the situation in Lebanon but the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and the West Bank as well.

"Any initiative or effort towards achieving a peaceful resolution to these conflicts is highly welcome," he added.
