Myanmar national pleads guilty to gouging man’s left eye


BUTTERWORTH: A Myanmar national who gouged out the left eye of a man has pleaded guilty to causing severe injury and permanent disability to the victim at the Magistrate's Court here on Friday (Nov 22).

Murtabis, 28, entered the plea before Assistant Registrar of the Court Mohamad Azrul Muhd Sobri.

According to the charge, the accused had caused severe injury to M.Gunalan, 52, on Jalan Ara Kuda, Tasek Gelugor at 2pm on Nov 16, reported Astro Awani.

The charge was made under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum punishment of seven years imprisonment and a fine if found guilty.

Meanwhile, in the same court, Murtabis also pleaded guilty to the charge of not possessing any valid travel documents.

The offence was alleged to have been committed at Kampung Simpang Tiga Tasek Gelugor around 3pm on the same day.

For this offence, he was charged under Section 6(1)(C) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 which provides a penalty of a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or imprisonment for up to five years or both, and not more than six strokes of the cane.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Airina Syazreen Zainurin prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.

No bail was allowed, as the accused is not a citizen.

The court set Dec 13 for next mention.
