MALAYSIA has received the highest number of refugees from Myanmar and will address the crisis as Asean chairman, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

The Foreign Minister said Malaysia will continue highlighting the plight of these refugees and lobby support for a more pragmatic regional response.

“As the Chair of Asean next year, we have the responsibility to lead Asean’s efforts in addressing the crisis in Myanmar.

“This effort will continue to be based on the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) as agreed upon by Asean leaders in April 2021,” he said in a written reply to Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat).

Mohamad said humanitarian assistance for Myanmar people will continue to be emphasised and prioritised without discrimination.

He said Malaysia remains committed to pursuing efforts for a peaceful resolution.
