Indonesian Parliament approves Destry as new Bank Indonesia governor

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) on Tuesday approved acting Bank Indonesia (BI) governor Destry Damayanti as the central bank’s new governor, succeeding Perry Warjiyo who resigned in July.

The DPR also approved BI deputy governor Aida S. Budiman as senior deputy governor and BI assistant governor Solikin M Juhro as deputy governor, with all three to serve for the 2026-2031 term.

Commission XI chairman Mukhamad Misbakhun said the commission selected Destry, Aida and Solikin through deliberation and consensus after conducting fit and proper tests on the candidates on Aug 26 and 27.

He said the new leadership was expected to enable BI to work in a more focused and targeted manner, particularly in promoting economic growth and job creation.

"This commitment (promoting economic growth, job creation) must be demonstrated through the implementation of clear regulations and operational guidelines for Bank Indonesia’s policies,” said Mukhamad while presenting the commission’s report at the DPR’s fourth plenary sitting of the 2026-2027 session.

Perry resigned as BI governor on July 25 after leading the central bank since 2018, with Destry who had served as senior deputy governor since 2019 subsequently appointed acting governor.

President Prabowo Subianto later nominated Destry as the sole candidate to permanently succeed Perry, while Aida was nominated as the sole candidate to fill the senior deputy governor post vacated by Destry.

Solikin and BI Currency Management Department Executive Director M Anwar Bashori were, meanwhile, nominated for the deputy governor post held by Aida, with Commission XI selecting Solikin following the fit and proper tests before the three names were referred to Tuesday’s plenary sitting for approval. - Bernama
