Armed Forces panel to rule on penalties, including expulsion, for UPNM cadet


KUALA LUMPUR: Stern action, including expulsion and revocation of his scholarship, could await the Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) senior cadet charged with assaulting a junior.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the Armed Forces Investigation Board will make its decision on the punishment on Tuesday (Nov 12).

"I am not ruling out the possibility that the cadet could be expelled and forced to pay back the scholarship given by the ministry.

"We will not compromise in taking action on matters involving discipline and violence," he told a press conference after launching the ministry's Integrity Day celebration at Wisma Pertahanan here on Tuesday.

Khaled said the senior cadet will face the maximum action that could be taken.

"When cadets act violently, we will not hesitate to take stern action against them, including expelling them (from the course they are taking)," he said.

On Friday (Nov 8), a cadet from the university claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to causing hurt to his junior using a steam iron.

Amirul Iskandar Norhanizan, 22, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out to him by an interpreter before judge Egusra Ali.

According to the charge sheet, Amirul Iskandar allegedly voluntarily caused hurt to Muhammad Salman Mohd Saiful Surash, 20, by using a hot steam iron.

He was accused of committing the offence in a dormitory room at the military academy at about 11.45pm on Oct 22.
