Cops record statements from nine in latest UPNM bullying case probe


KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded statements from nine people in the investigation into the latest bullying case at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM).

Kuala Lumpur police chief, Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, said the statements were obtained from the 19-year-old male victim and eight others since a report was lodged on Nov 8.

"We will be recording the statement of the suspect, a senior cadet at the university, at Cheras police headquarters later today. We are investigating under Section 325 of the Penal Code," he said when contacted on Monday (Nov 11).

Comm Rusdi advised the public not to speculate on the matter.

"Let the police investigate the case thoroughly," he added.

It was reported that another case of alleged bullying leading to injury at UPNM has come to light.

Comm Rusdi said a report was lodged on 8 November at around 8.40pm.

The report stated that the victim, a Year 1 student at the university, had been injured on Oct 21 after roll call at the field.

“The victim, aged 19, is reported to have suffered fractured ribs and spine after being stepped on by a Year 3 student. The victim is still being treated for the injuries," he said.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that the ministry will not tolerate any form of bullying.

"Such incidents should not have happened and they have tarnished the image of UPNM and other institutions of higher learning. We are leaving the matter for the police to investigate, and I, along with the ministry, will give our full cooperation," he said.

On 8 November, a cadet from the university claimed trial at the Sessions Court for allegedly causing hurt to his junior using a steam iron.

Amirul Iskandar Norhanizan, 22, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him by the interpreter before Judge Egusra Ali.

According to the charge sheet, Amirul Iskandar allegedly voluntarily caused hurt to Muhammad Salman Mohd Saiful Surash, 20, by using a hot steam iron.

He was accused of committing the offence in a dormitory room at the military academy at about 11.45pm on Oct 22.
