Bullying incidences damaging to UPNM’s reputation, says Khaled

KUALA LUMPUR: The case involving a first-year student of Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), who suffered fractures to his ribs and spine due to alleged bullying, is unacceptable and detrimental to the institution’s reputation, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin (pic).

The Defence Minister said his ministry had submitted the case to the police.

“Following the police report (made by the victim), the ministry has referred the matter to the police for investigation.

“The ministry views such incidents as inappropriate and damages the image of UPNM as well as to higher education institutions,” he said.

He added that his ministry would give their full cooperation and attention to the matter.

In a statement yesterday, Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said a report had been lodged around 8.40pm on Nov 8.

In the report, the victim claimed that he had been injured after a roll call at the field on Oct 21.

“The victim, aged 19, is reported to have suffered from fractured ribs and spine after he was stepped on by a third year student.

“The victim is still being treated for his injuries,” Comm Rusdi said.

The case was being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code, he added.

Comm Rusdi urged the public to not speculate as the investigation was ongoing.

On Nov 8, a cadet from the university, Amirul Iskandar Norhanizan, claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to voluntarily causing injury to his junior Muhammad Salman Mohd Saiful Surash, 20, by using a hot steam iron.

The 22-year-old was accused of committing the offence in a dormitory room of the military academy around 11.45pm on Oct 22.

He pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out to him by the interpreter before judge Egusra Ali.
