Six Malbatt members hurt in Lebanon explosion


KUALA LUMPUR: Six Malaysian Battalion (Malbatt) members were injured during an explosion near Saida Stadium in Lebanon.

Those injured were five Malbatt 850-12 personnel and one from Malbatt 850-11.

"The incident occurred when they were en route to Marakah Camp from Beirut at 7.45pm Malaysian time (1.54pm Lebanese time) on Thursday (Nov 7).

"The explosion targeted a civilian vehicle, which was heading to Beirut but it also damaged a bus transporting the Malbatt personnel," the Armed Forces said in a statement.

Five Malbatt 850-12 personnel suffered several minor injuries, including one who had a suspected closed fracture to the left arm.

"A Malbatt 850-11 personnel also suffered minor injuries.

"The personnel with the injured arm was rushed to the Hamood Hospital in Saida for treatment," the Armed Forces said.

The Armed Forces said it will continue to monitor the latest development closely.

"We will give updates on the incident from time to time.

"We are committed towards the safety and wellbeing of personnel conducting peacekeeping missions under the banners of the United Nations," it said.

The Malbatt-12 squad consists of 854 officers and personnel being sent to Lebanon to relieve the current Malbatt 850-11 stationed there.

They are being sent to Lebanon in stages until Nov 18 with the first batch consisting of 220 personnel deployed on Wednesday.
