Malaysian peacekeepers depart for Lebanon amidst rising conflict, says Defence Minister

SUBANG: The latest Malaysian Battalion (Malbatt) team deployed to Lebanon is well-prepared to face any challenges, even amid the ongoing conflict there, says Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Defence Minister said that the Malbatt squads represent Malaysia’s commitment to promoting global peace.

“This commitment is no different for the 12th Malbatt squad, Malbatt 850-12, which is now being sent to Lebanon. The challenges they face will undoubtedly test their resilience, expertise, and adaptability.

"It will also test their spirit of service, but I am confident they will overcome any obstacle,” he said during a press conference following the send-off ceremony for the first batch of Malbatt 850-12 at Subang Air Force base on Wednesday (Nov 6).

The deployment of Malbatt units reinforces Malaysia’s reputation as a nation dedicated to diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, he added.

The Malbatt 850-12 squad comprises 854 officers and personnel, with the first batch of 220 officers deployed on Wednesday. Subsequent groups will follow until Nov 18.

The rotation of the Malbatt squad was scheduled by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) after considering all relevant factors and the current situation in the region, Khaled said.

“This rotation is not unique to Malaysia; peacekeeping units from other countries also adhere to similar schedules,” he explained.

Khaled noted that UNIFIL has implemented safety protocols in the event of an attack by Israel on Lebanon. “Peacekeeping units like Malbatt are instructed to remain in bunkers during any attack and are exempt from logistical duties if hostilities arise,” he added.

As with previous deployments, Malbatt 850-12 officers and personnel completed 12 weeks of training in Port Dickson before their departure. This comprehensive programme covers peacekeeping skills, cultural awareness, team-building exercises, medical preparedness, and safety protocols, ensuring that they are “fit for the mission,” said Khaled.

Malbatt 850-12 will replace the current Malbatt 850-11 squad stationed in southern Lebanon, as part of a scheduled rotation under UNIFIL’s mandate and protocols. The new squad will deploy in stages from Nov 6-18, while the outgoing team will return to Malaysia in phases from Nov 7-19.

The Malbatt 850-12 team will carry on the responsibilities of its predecessor under the United Nations mandate.
