China-flag waving incident: Event organisers violated assembly regulations, say cops

IPOH: A cultural event in Teluk Intan, where Chinese flags were publicly displayed, has violated conditions under the Peaceful Assembly Act.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris stated that the procession, which included religious elements and several floats, took place from 8pm to 11.30pm on Thursday (Oct 24).

"We have summoned the organiser to record a statement," he said.

The organiser has also been asked to ensure all foreign participants, believed to be from China, come forward to aid in the investigation.

The incident is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act and Section 3(1) of the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act for displaying a foreign emblem in a public space.

Comm Azizi emphasised that any party intending to hold a gathering must submit an application to the police 10 days before the event.

Hilir Perak police received a complaint about the incident on Friday (Oct 25) at about 12.40pm.

Comm Azizi also advised the public against participating in illegal gatherings that could cause disturbances or threaten public order.

He added that individuals found guilty under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act could face fines of up to RM10,000.
