Three senators, including new appointee, take oath of office

KUALA LUMPUR: Three senators, including a new appointee, took their oath of office before Senate President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah on Monday (May 25).

Among them was Prof Datuk Dr Noor Inayah Yaakub, the chief executive officer and vice-chancellor of International University of the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (UniMAIWP), who was appointed as a new Senator.

The other two Senators sworn in were Hussin Ismail and Dr RA Lingeshwaran, who were reappointed after being re-elected by the Terengganu and Penang state legislative assemblies, respectively.

In his speech, Awang Bemee said Noor Inayah, who was elected by the Penang state legislative assembly, would serve a three-year term from May 14, 2026, until May 13, 2029.

He said Lingeshwaran would also serve for the same period, while Hussin's reappointment, which took effect on April 23, will end on April 22, 2029.

"On behalf of the Senate, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and welcome the appointment and re-election of all Honourable Senators sworn in today," he said after the oath-taking ceremony.

Awang Bemee expressed hope that all appointed senators would utilise their experience, expertise and wisdom through active participation in debates, raising quality questions and contributing effectively in Senate Select Committees for the well-being of the people and the nation's progress.

"In this challenging environment, the people have high expectations for Parliament to continue playing an effective role in scrutinising government policies, presenting thoughtful views and proposing practical, balanced and constructive solutions," he said.

He also reminded Senators that the Senate functions not only as a body to examine and approve Bills, but also as a platform for mature, prudent and constructive debates in the interest of the people.

According to the Parliamentary calendar, the Senate sitting for the Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament will be held for 10 days beginning July 20. - Bernama
