Circus in Kota Baru to feature only male performers after council's conditional nod

KOTA BARU: The Kota Bharu Municipal Council-Islamic City has given conditional approval for an international circus group's performance at a local shopping centre, as it will only have male performers.

State Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment Committee chairman Hilmi Abdullah said the Great British Circus - which has shows scheduled from October 26 to November 17 - will be different from other performances as it will be all-male.

"The foreign circus group's willingness to follow these conditions shows that the state government's entertainment rules are clear and can be followed by both local and international event organisers," he said in a statement reported by Sinar Harian.

"Kelantan does not oppose entertainment as long as it complies with syariah law, respecting religious and community sensitivities. Islam recognises the human need for entertainment in daily life," added Hilmi.

He said that the state government enacted the Entertainment and Entertainment Places Control Enactment 1998 and created the Entertainment Control Guidelines 2003 and State Circular No. 4/2003 to oversee entertainment activities in Kelantan.

Further, Hilmi said the state government is preparing to introduce a new version of the Entertainment and Entertainment Places Control Enactment to meet contemporary lifestyle needs.
