Mufti Bill went through long, detailed process, says Religious Affairs Minister

PETALING JAYA: The Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill 2024 was not rushed through but underwent a thorough process of consultation and checks, says Datuk Dr Mohd Naim Mokhtar.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) also denied that the Bill had been influenced by certain parties.

"The Bill is an effort by the government to strengthen the mufti's institution in the Federal Territories," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 15).

"Through this, fatwa and syarak laws can be administered in an orderly and transparent manner for a more effective Islamic administration in the country," he added.

He said a committee on the Bill was set up in 2021 to study and enact an Act especially for muftis.

"The committee (comprised) representatives from mufti's offices (from various states), Jakim, the Attorney General's Chambers, Syariah Judges Department, Federal Territory Syariah Court, and Federal Territories Islamic Department.

"The Bill underwent a long and detailed process to ensure the enactment was orderly and comprehensive in line with the Federal Constitution and other laws," he said.

He also advised caution in issuing statements about the Bill that are not based on facts as it could lead to a polemic against the proposed law.
