Babas and Nyonyas of Melaka to present captivating cultural show on Nov 9

MELAKA: The Babas and Nyonyas of Melaka will showcase their cultural glory through an enthralling performance next month.

Organiser Melaka Chinese Peranakan Association is promising an evening of music, dance and parody theatre on Nov 9.

Production manager Daniel Ang Yam Seng said the classical "Dah Sachupak Tak Boley Sagantang" stage performance is set to captivate and educate audiences about the societal values, gender hierarchy and unique "pantang larang" (do's and don'ts) of Baba Nyonya culture.

Scheduled only for a single day at Panggung Bangsawan on Jalan Munshi Abdullah, the event will feature a charming blend of drama, creativity, and artistry, said Ang.

"It's a heartwarming play about family, portraying the vibrant traditions, exquisite cuisine, intricate textiles and unique language spoken by the Baba and Nyonya community," he said.

Ang said the performance aims to spotlight iconic narratives of the Peranakan community, showcasing their resilience, love, and cultural pride, helping to preserve their unique heritage for future generations.

Ang added that the event, supported by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, is produced by the association and directed by Baba Steven Chan Chin Ho with an original script by the late Datuk Kenny Chan.

"This production features an extraordinary cast of talented local performers who will take the audience on a journey celebrating the rich tapestry of Peranakan heritage and culture," Ang added.

Tickets are available at Melaka Chinese Peranakan Association, which can be contacted at 06-2837215.
