NGO member busted for selling honorary title

MELAKA: A representative of a non-governmental organisation was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes from a businessman to secure him the honorary title of “Datuk Seri”.

The 42-year-old female suspect, formerly a reporter with a state-owned media outlet, supposedly deceived the victim into believing he would be conferred the title during the state investiture ceremony last year and collected RM48,000 from him.

A Melaka MACC insider said the commission had found doubtful transactions believed to have been deposited into the suspect’s account between 2022 and 2023.

The suspect was arrested on Wednesday when she was summoned to the state MACC headquarters to aid the investigation.

She was produced at the Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh here yesterday, where magistrate Nor Syaliati Mohd Sobri ordered her to be remanded for five days.
