DOE DG, deputy to be charged as early as April 3, says MACC

PUTRAJAYA: Charges are expected to be filed against the director-general and deputy director-general of the Department of Environment (DOE) as early as Friday (April 3), says Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

He said the necessary approvals have been obtained and the duo is expected to be charged at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur, barring any last-minute issues.

“We have obtained the necessary approvals and charges are expected to be filed tomorrow against both the Director-General and Deputy Director-General of the Department of Environment, subject to there being no complications.

“The case is expected to be heard at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur,” he told reporters after attending the Multi-Agency Task Force (MATF): Way Forward engagement session at the MACC headquarters here on Thursday (April 2).

On the leadership of the department, Azam said the appointment of a new DOE director-general is under the purview of the Chief Secretary to the Government.

“I expect a new director-general to be appointed after both are charged in court,” he said.

He did not elaborate further on the nature of the charges.

On Jan 29, the duo were detained after they turned up to give statements at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya.

The two were brought to court for a remand application the next day (Jan 30), along with two other suspects

They were detained to assist in investigations linked to alleged irregularities involving electronic waste (e-waste).
