JOHOR BARU: A total of 20 foreign men are expected to be charged at the Magistrate’s Court for their involvement in scamming unsuspecting victims by offering fake jobs on Thursday (Oct 10).
Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the foreign nationals, aged between 21 and 36 years, were arrested at around 12.30pm during an operation at a residential area at Horizon Hills in Iskandar Puteri on Sept 23.
“Police suspected that the premises was turned into a call centre, which offers non-existent jobs. Investigations found the suspects to be involved in cheating cases by offering online jobs to their victims living abroad.
“During the raid, police also seized several devices including computers and mobile phones used by the suspects to carry out their illegal activities,” he said in a statement here.
Comm Kumar also said the syndicate’s modus operandi involved searching for victims via online and that they used love scam tactics to cheat victims by offering jobs.
He added that victims that showed interest would be provided with an access to a website, which allegedly showed the profits they made for every task given.
“However, their victims only realise they have been cheated after failing to withdraw their financial profits shown on the website despite making many payments as ordered by the suspects,” he said.
Comm Kumar added investigation papers have been forwarded to the deputy public prosecutor where all 20 suspects will be charged under Section 120B(2) of the Penal Code.
He urged the public to be more vigilant and not be easily swayed by any offers they come across on social media or online that promise high returns in a short period of time.
“Please carry out checks with the relevant agencies such as the police and Bank Negara to get verification and further information whether it is a scam," he said.
