60 hikers rescued after heavy rain at Gunung Ledang Waterfall

TANGKAK: The Fire and Rescue Department rescued 60 hikers after heavy rain cut off the path leading down from the Gunung Ledang Waterfall.

Tangkak Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Rafiah Aziz said the department received the distress call from the Johor National Park management at 12.51pm on Sunday (Sept 15).

“Most of them were from the same group of factory workers who were planning to go camping at the campsite at the top of the waterfall.

“They started their hike at 10am. However, after camping for about two hours, it started raining heavily in the area.

“The heavy downpour has caused the water level at the pond to rise, creating a strong current that has also submerged the bridge that is used to travel up and down the mountain,” she said when contacted.

She added that the victims were rescued after the water current slowed down, and no injuries were recorded.

“All of them were adults. The operation ended at 3.15pm,” she said, adding that nine personnel were involved in the rescue operation, along with one fire truck and one emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) van.
