Two still hospitalised from latest case of JB odour pollution

JOHOR BARU: Two patients are still hospitalised following the latest odour pollution incident in a spate of cases in Johor over the past few days.

Johor health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said 47 people experienced discomfort or mild symptoms on Monday (Sept 9) and Tuesday (Sept 10).

"Both children and adults were affected and 10 sought medical treatment from government and private clinics.

"Three people were warded at Hospital Sultanah Aminah and Hospital Sultan Ismail for medical treatment.

"At present, two are still warded for continued observation," he said when contacted on Wednesday (Sept 11).

He added that those who experienced mild symptoms were allowed to return home after receiving treatment.

Earlier, Ling said the state government via the Johor Baru district disaster management committee and relevant agencies is continuously monitoring the situation.

A spate of odour pollution cases were reported in various locations in Johor since Sept 3, including in Pandan, Skudai and Tebrau in Johor Baru as well as Kampung Orang Asli Pasir Intan in Kota Tinggi.

Some people experienced symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath and fever.

Ling said Tiong Nam Industrial Park and Desa Tropika Industrial Area were the source of the pollution and clean-up works are underway and will be completed by Sept 22.

This also led to the temporary closure of three schools in the vicinity.

Police also arrested two suspects, a lorry driver and his assistant, on Tuesday (Sept 10) over the issue.
