Centre ordered shut after baby’s death under its care

MELAKA: A childcare centre in Taman Kelemak Utama, Alor Gajah here has been ordered closed by the Melaka Social Welfare Department following the death of an eight-month-old baby boy under its care last Friday. Its director Halyjah Muhammad said the centre’s closure took effect at 5pm on Monday.

A closure order notice was signed by the childcare centre operator before being displayed at the entrance of the premises, she said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.

It was previously reported that the centre was not registered with the department, but had received support from other agencies such as the Alor Gajah Municipal Council and the Health Office.

On Sept 6, Sabrina Hakiem Zaini, 39, tragically lost her eight-month-old son Muhammad Al Fateh. The baby, who reached the childcare centre at 7am that day, was rushed to Alor Gajah Hospital at 9am after his nose started bleeding and his body turned blue. He died later.

A 34-year-old childminder has since been remanded for seven days over the matter.

Meanwhile, Halyjah said that since last August, action had been taken against 27 unregistered childcare centres in the state.

“The list of registered childcare centres is available on our portal at www.jkm.my,” she said.
