Proposal for Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman as Special Economic Zone for bumiputra underway, says Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposal to designate Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in the city as a Special Economic Zone for bumiputra will be presented to the Cabinet, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president said the matter will be brought to the Cabinet to enable the proposal to be implemented.

“Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani who is the Federal Territories Umno chairman and myself will present the matter, to ensure its implementation,” he said in his winding-up speech at the end of 2024 Umno General Assembly here, on Saturday (Aug 24).

Kuala Lumpur Umno delegate Datuk Tengku Azman Tengku Zainol Abidin had proposed to turn Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman into a Special Economic Zone for bumiputra culture, arts and heritage as well as to recognise it as a tourist spot.

When debating the presidential address at the 2024 Umno general assembly on Friday (Aug 23),Tengku Azman highlighted the road’s significance to the Malay identity, especially culture and arts, as it was the community’s popular shopping spot, especially during Ramadan.

In another development, the Umno president also appointed Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor as one of the party’s supreme council member.

Such appointment marks the first time, an Orang Asli representative into the party’s supreme council rank.

“In honouring, the contributions of the Orang Asli community, I have appointed Ramli who is the Cameron Highland Member of Parliament to be part of the Umno supreme council,” he said.

Ramli who is currently serving as Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker is also the first MP from the Orang Asli community.
