KLUANG: A 42-year-old woman was killed and three of her relatives seriously injured after the van they were travelling in crashed into the rear of a lorry on the North-South Expressway here.
Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said the accident occurred at KM55.1 of the expressway at about 1am on Friday (Aug 14).
He said initial investigations found that the lorry, driven by a 37-year-old local man, was travelling from Johor Baru towards Ayer Hitam when it broke down in the right lane.
“The driver switched on the hazard lights and placed a warning triangle on the road behind the lorry before temporarily leaving the vehicle while waiting for assistance.
“A few minutes later, a van travelling along the same stretch is believed to have lost control and crashed into the rear of the lorry,” he said in a statement on Friday.
ACP Bahrin said the woman, who was driving the van, suffered serious head and body injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her 38-year-old husband and their 12-year-old son escaped unhurt.
However, her husband’s 36-year-old brother, who is a person with disabilities, and his two daughters, aged 13 and 14, suffered serious head and body injuries.
They were taken to Hospital Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom in Kluang and are receiving treatment in the emergency department’s red zone.
ACP Bahrin said the lorry driver was unhurt and tested negative for drugs.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333).
