DBKL urged to check drainage, sewerage systems after Masjid India sidewalk collapse

KUALA LUMPUR: The city's drainage and sewerage system should be checked thoroughly to ensure there are no issues underground, says Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun.

Commenting on the incident where a 48-year-old woman fell into a sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India here on Friday (Aug 23), he said precautions were necessary as the area was a popular tourist attraction, especially among visitors from India.

The victim, who is currently the focus of a search and rescue (SAR) operation, is an Indian national.

“First on the agenda, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) should look at this for safety reasons.

“It should find out if there are leakages in the drains not only because of this incident but also for the future.

"If there are issues, rectification works must be carried out especially now that the pedestrian has collapsed,” he told reporters at the scene.

Asked if any similar incidents had occurred there, he said this was the first time.

He added that some 200 personnel from DBKL, the police, Fire and Rescue Department and other agencies have been deployed for the operation.

It was reported earlier that the woman was walking in the area at around 8am when a section of the sidewalk caved in, leaving an 8m-deep sinkhole.

The city Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 8.22am and dispatched 15 firemen from two stations to the scene.
