JOHOR BARU: Four friends were charged at the Magistrate's Court here with distributing more than 59kg of dangerous drugs.

Lo Shaw Jie, 26, Pui Wei Hao, 31, Chu Chien Yaeh, 36, and S. Jiveen, 39, nodded when the charge was read before Magistrate R. Salini on Thursday (Aug 22).

However, no plea was recorded from the accused.

According to the charge sheet, the four men were found to have distributed MDMA (methylenedioxy-methamphetamine), which is a dangerous drug, with a gross weight of 59,581g.

They allegedly did so in an apartment unit on Jalan Dato Abdullah Tahir here at around 12.30am on Aug 12.

The accused were charged under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

The four of them face a death sentence or life imprisonment for the charge, if convicted.

If the court later decides on a life sentence, the accused could each receive not less than 15 strokes of the cane.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Nur Ameerah Allaudeen while the four accused were unrepresented.

The prosecution did not offer a bail for all four as charges under Section 39B of the Act are non-bailable.

The magistrate set Nov 20 for next mention pending the chemical report.
