Robbery suspects hurt after high-speed car chase in Melaka

MELAKA: Two robbery suspects were injured while fleeing from police along Jalan Pengkalan Alor Gajah on Tuesday (Aug 20).

Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Ashari Abu Samah said a 45-year-old suspect and his 20-year-old accomplice were hurt in the 9.10am accident.

He said both the suspects, who are from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, respectively, have been admitted to the Alor Gajah Hospital for treatment.

"The duo drove on the opposite side of the road while trying to escape from the police before colliding with an oncoming pick-up truck at a traffic light junction along the stretch.

"The 35-year-old driver of the pick-up truck, who is a farmer, escaped unscathed," he said.

Supt Ashari said the high-speed chase between police and the suspect occurred from Kampung Lapan in Melaka Tengah district before the accident happened in Alor Gajah.

He said police also found baggage containing substances believed to be drugs and equipment to stage house break-ins in the suspects' car.

Supt Ashari said investigation on the suspects is being carried out by Melaka Tengah police while the accident is being probed under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
