Duo jailed after failing to pay fine for stealing box of frozen patin in Sibu


SIBU: Two men learned a hard lesson for stealing a box of frozen patin (catfish) worth RM90.

A Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday (Aug 7) fined them RM2,000 and RM1,000, respectively, after they pleaded guilty to the offence.

However, both could not pay the fine and had to be jailed.

The first accused Mohammad Syaiful, 40, will serve two months in jail while the second accused, Mohammad Faizal, 36, will be jailed for one month.

Magistrate Oon Kork Chern were told that the accused persons stole the item weighing 10kg from a supermarket in Sibu Jaya on July 21 at about 10.21am.

They were jointly charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code.

The section carries imprisonment of up to seven years or a fine or both if found guilty.

The first accused was arrested on Aug 2 near the Kampung Hilir roundabout, while the second was picked up the next day from a house in Sibujaya.

The arrests happened after a police report was made by the manager of the supermarket.
