First steps in civil service pay review to be revealed soon, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Several preliminary measures in the updated Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) will be announced in the coming weeks with the full announcement during Budget 2025 in October, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said the SSPA will be implemented by Dec 1, and will be the highest increase since the country’s independence.

“The country is developing but for the past 12 years, there has been no comprehensive study on updating the SSPA.

“Also, we want to recognise the role of civil servants.

“Governments and prime ministers have changed but civil servants have professionally carried out their duties,” he said when launching the Malaysia Civil Servants Housing Programme (PPAM) at Bandar Sri Permaisuri here on Tuesday (Aug 6).

Elaborating on the updated SSPA, Anwar said it was intended to ensure civil servants' wages matched their services to the people.

“God willing, we can achieve this,” he said.

Separately, the Prime Minister also acknowledged that the cost of living is still challenging.

“We do not deny that. We don’t put it aside In our budget strategy and economic planning,” he said.

However, Anwar said facts such as the price of sugar and oil being cheaper here than in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia should not be rejected.

He also stressed that the government is avoiding wasting money by carrying out events in moderation.

“Ministers' salaries are cut even though civil servants' wages are going up.

“Even the Prime Minister is not taking a salary.

“We want to prove that not everyone with a position just wants to swindle money.

“Salaries are one’s right but we are firmly against corruption and leakages,” he added.
