Man killed after crashing on Second Penang Bridge


BALIK PULAU: A security officer was killed after he lost control of his vehicle at km 18.2 of the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge early Monday (Aug 5) morning.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Kamarul Rizal Jenal said in the 6am incident, the victim M.Guna, 29, was confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel.

"The accident happened after the vehicle driven by the victim lost control," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 5).

Supt Kamarul said initial investigation found the incident occured while the victim was driving alone from Batu Kawan on the mainland side to Batu Maung on the island.

He said upon reaching the scene, the vehicle skidded, spun around and collided with the motorcycle lane barrier at the left lane of the road.

He said further checks at the scene also found the weather was fine with dry roads at that time.

Supt Kamarul said the Fire and Rescue Department personnel help in the operation by extricating the body from the wreckage.

"Further checks found the decease has a valid driving licence, though the road tax of the vehicle has expired in March," he said, adding the body has been sent for post mortem

He said police will review the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and track eyewitnesses of the incident to assist with the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
