Leaders across political divide slam killing

PETALING JAYA: Investigations must be carried out immediately into the assassination of former Palestinian prime minister Ismail Haniyeh so that those responsible can be brought to justice, says government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil.

He said the Cabinet, following its weekly meeting, has condemned the assassination of the Hamas chief in Teheran, Iran, and is standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

“The Cabinet also expresses condolences to the family of the former Palestinian prime minister and we urge immediate investigations so that those responsible can be brought to justice.

“The Malaysian government will continue voicing out support and cooperating with other countries in our efforts to push for Palestinians to be freed from any form of oppression,” said Fahmi.

Wisma Putra said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul is in Teheran as Malaysia’s representative in the inauguration ceremony of new Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.

It added that Johari and other members of the Malaysian delegation in Teheran are safe following the attack.

Johari condemned the “cruel and violent” assassination of Haniyeh.

“I express my condolences to the people of Palestine on the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and his bodyguard in the Zionist regime’s raid at his residence in Teheran,” Johari said in a post on X.

PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang also strongly condemned the assassination.

In a statement, he expressed deep sorrow over Haniyeh’s death, adding that he and PAS extend their condolences to his family and prayed “that Allah grants them the reward of martyrdom”.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man also offered his condolences, sharing a tribute on Facebook.

Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung said the assassination of Haniyeh showed a blatant disregard for international law and the principles of sovereignty.

“Such actions not only escalate regional tensions but also violate the norms of conduct and the protection of human rights.

“The use of extrajudicial measures to target individuals, regardless of their affiliations, sets a dangerous precedent and compromises efforts toward peace and stability in the region,” Lee said on Facebook.

Earlier, Hamas announced that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting his residence in the Iranian capital, according to Anadolu Agency.

Iranian television also reported Haniyeh’s death, stating that an investigation into the murder is underway and results will be announced soon.
