PBAPP deploying water tankers as stand-by measures for Hari Raya

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) is deploying a fleet of 13 water tankers as a stand-by measure for the Hari Raya festive season.

The corporation said the measure was to avoid or minimise unscheduled water supply interruption during the hot and dry season.

PBAPP chief executive officer K. Pathmanathan said potential deployment areas would be in the neighbourhoods of Relau, Bukit Belah in the South-West district and Central Seberang Perai.

"The primary rationale for the PBAPP Water Contingency Plan was the projected high water consumption before and during a hot and dry festive season," said Pathmanathan in a statement on Monday (April 8).

"PBAPP is anticipating that water consumption during the 'balik kampung' and Hari Raya festive period from April 7 to April 14 may equal or exceed 927 million litres per day (MLD).

Pathmanathan said deploying the water tankers was a preventive and mitigation measure.

He said there would be 47 static water tanks (maximum capacity of 2,000 litres) during the festive period which could be extended in response to the water demand.

"We would seek the kind cooperation of water consumers to use water wisely during the Hari Raya period as Penang is still experiencing hot and dry weather which is depleting dam storage reserves.

"For now the overall water supply status in Penang is under control with a prediction of significantly higher rainfall in the coming three to four months," added Pathmanathan.
