Heatwave: Armed Forces ready to help carry out cloud seeding, says deputy minister

ALOR GAJAH: The Malaysia Armed Forces is ready to cooperate with the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to carry out cloud seeding operations if there is a need due to the current heatwave and lack of rainfall in the country, says Adly Zahari.

The Deputy Defence Minister said that usually, the Royal Malaysia Airforce (RMAF) would be involved in the cloud seeding process but there had not been any requests so far.

"Our air assets are on continuous alert and are ready to cooperate should there be any requests. Previously, the Armed Forces were involved in cloud seeding operations in Sabah as well as in the peninsula. If there are any requests, we will help.

"However, cloud seeding also has to take into account other factors such as the condition of the clouds and the prevailing winds before being carried out," he said at a breaking of fast event in Durian Tunggal here on Saturday (March 23).

It was reported earlier that Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad had said that sveral factors needed to be considered before carrying out cloud seeing to avoid wasted efforts.

"Cloud seeding operations are carried out with the cooperation of the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) when it is suitable.

"Such operations are also not cheap, so when we actually carry them out, it has to be effective," he said on March 16. - Bernama
