Scrap dealer fined RM3,500 for criminal intimidation

BAHAU: A 56-year-old scrap metal seller was fined RM3,500 in default three months’ jail by the Magistrate's Court here for criminal intimidation.

Krisnan Bathumalai did not contest the charge after it was read to him before Magistrate Norshazwani Ishak on Tuesday (March 12).

He was charged with threatening to shoot auxiliary policeman Muhamad Hafiz Iskandar at around 7.15pm on Jan 28, 2023, at a guard post of a plantation here.

Apart from threatening to burn down the post, the accused also allegedly hurled expletives at the auxiliary policeman and threatened to harm his family.

Krisnan was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine or both upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Farahidah Zool Beri asked the court to impose a deterrent sentence.

In mitigation, Krishnan's counsel Paul Krishnaraja asked for a minimum fine as his client was remorseful and a first-time offender.

"He also has to provide for his five children as well as two older sisters, one of whom is a special needs individual.

"My client has also given an undertaking not to get on the wrong side of the law again," he added.
