Hospital Kuala Kangsar upgrade to be completed by February 2026

IPOH: Upgrading works at Hospital Kuala Kangsar's Emergency and Trauma Department will be completed in early 2026, the Perak state assembly was told.

The RM20mil upgrade began in August and is scheduled for completion by Feb 10, 2026, said state human resources, health, Indian community affairs and national integration committee chairman A. Sivanesan.

“The project aims to address congestion issues at the department, while enhancing the quality of healthcare services for the people of Kuala Kangsar and surrounding areas," he said in reply to Azizi Mohamed Ridzuwan (PN-Lubok Merbau) on Wednesday (Feb 28).

Azizi said he frequently received complaints about the lack of specialists at the hospital, and that some patients were referred to Hospital Taiping even for minor surgery.

He asked about the state government's plans to upgrade Hospital Kuala Kangsar.

The hospital, built in 1901, is under the Northern Perak hospital cluster which includes Hospital Taiping, a major specialist centre, as well as the facilities in Gerik, Parit Buntar and Selama.

The assembly was told that Hospital Kuala Kangsar had successfully expanded six specialised services since 2017, namely internal medicine, paediatrics, emergency medicine, radiology, psychiatry, and geriatric rehabilitation.

Sivanesan said Perak Ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah had also recently instructed that internal medicine specialists should be stationed at Hospital Kuala Kangsar.

“This matter is under the purview of the Medical Development Division and Human Resource Division of the Health Ministry,” he added.
