Golden dragon shines bright in Kluang

KLUANG: A magnificent and luminous golden dragon measuring 81.6m has sprung to life to herald the Year of the Dragon.

“We believe that it is among the longest in Johor,” said Kluang Che Luan Khor Moral Uplifting Society chairman, Datuk Seri Pang Chee Khiong.

Pang said the dragon head was modelled after a dragon statue at the society’s main hall, while its body was embellished with gold and red materials to mimic scales, giving the creature a dazzling look. The golden dragon, located at the society’s car park in Jalan Lambak here, is one of three lantern models built by its members in conjunction with the festive season, said Pang.

Preparations started about six months ago with the assistance of around 30 members, he added.

“Our volunteers had spent more than a month constructing the dragon frame using iron bars before installing the wiring system and meticulously attaching the fabric,” he said.

“It was tedious work to put the models together, but many of our members brought their spouses along to help and we are grateful for that,” he added.

Pang explained that the golden dragon and two other models – a green dragon and a phoenix – symbolise good luck in traditional Chinese culture.

He said about RM30,000 was spent to put up the models, red lanterns and lights, which will be on display until Feb 24.

“This is to create a festive atmosphere for the public to enjoy for free, especially those returning to Kluang for the holidays,” Pang added.
