Prasarana offers free rides for the disabled from Feb 1

PETALING JAYA: With the OKU Smile pass, the disabled community will be able to enjoy free train and bus rides provided by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd from Feb 1.

Prasarana said the pass catered specifically to disabled people and was in line with the free ride initiative announced by the Transport Minister on Dec 21 last year.

“The pass is for all existing Prasarana OKU concession cardholders and new applicants.

“Activation and new applications will begin on Jan 15. This pass will allow OKU (people with disabilities) users to enjoy free rides from Feb 1,” it said in a statement yesterday.

It said existing OKU concession cardholders could activate their cards at any Rapid KL LRT, MRT, Monorail or BRT counter from today. Prasarana said the service would also be available at selected Rapid KL bus hubs such as Pasar Seni, Chow Kit, KLCC, Sri Nilam, Puchong Utama, Pearl Point, Sunway Pyramid, Greenwood and Seksyen 2, Shah Alam.

In Penang, it will be available at the Rapid Penang headquarters at Lorong Kulit, Weld Quay bus terminal, Komtar, Bukit Jambul, Balik Pulau, Bukit Mertajam, Kompleks Dato Kailan Kepala Batas and Penang Sentral.

In Kuantan, it will be available at the Bandar Kuantan bus stop.

To use the pass, cardholders have to ensure that they have a minimum of RM5 in their pass.

Those whose concession cards have expired can apply for new ones.

As for those who do not have the OKU concession card, applications can be made at the Pasar Seni and MRT Conlay hubs for Rapid KL; Rapid Penang headquarters at Lorong Kulit, Weld Quay bus terminal, Komtar, Bukit Jambul, Balik Pulau, Bukit Mertajam, Kompleks Dato Kailan Kepala Batas and Penang Sentral; as well as the Bandar Kuantan bus stop.

A RM5 fee will be charged for card issuance and the amount will be credited to the card in a one-time transaction.

Applicants are required to bring along their OKU card issued by the Welfare Department for verification.

The concession card for Rapid KL and Rapid Kuantan can be done online and applicants are required to upload details of their MyKad and OKU card, and a passport-sized photo with a blue or white background.

“Applicants can choose the location to collect their concession card as stated in the application form.

“For applications that are complete with documents, the concession cards will be sent to the selected location within three days,” it added.
