Floods: Johor sees steep increase in victims in less than a day


JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has increased by more than four times in less than 24 hours.

According to the state disaster management committee, the number has gone up to 1,485 as of noon on Friday (Jan 5) compared to only 330 people at 2pm on Thursday (Jan 4).

“Flood relief centres have been seeing a significant increase in the number of evacuees on Thursday," it said in a statement.

"By 8pm that day, the number of flood victims in Johor reached the 1,000 mark.

“As of noon Friday, the number of relief centres has also gone up to 13 from only seven the day before,” it said.

The four districts affected are Kota Tinggi, Johor Baru, Mersing and Kluang.

“This number has remained at four over the past 24 hours. Kota Tinggi has the most flood victims at 724.

“This is followed by Johor Baru (420 victims), Mersing (271 victims) and Kluang (70 victims),” it said.

The committee added that there are six flood relief centres in Kota Tinggi, four in Johor Baru, two in Mersing and one in Kluang.

“Most districts in Johor experienced rainy weather between 4am and noon Friday. However, since noon, only Kluang, Batu Pahat and Kota Tinggi continue to see bad weather while other districts have started to see sunshine,” it said.
