KOTA KINABALU: ‘Geng Andy’ has been busted for their alleged involvement in a string of tyre rim thefts, resulting in losses of around RM20,000 in and around the city.
Kota Kinabalu acting OCPD Supt Syed Lot Syed Ab Rahman said four men between the ages of 30 and 38 believed to be behind at least 10 such cases were nabbed following the July 30 and 31 raids.
He said police first tracked down a suspect by the roadside near Jalan Kg Meruntum, Putatan, near here, and seized a car believed to have been used in the thefts.
He added that two others were detained from a low-cost flat unit in Taman Sri Keramat later.
“We seized several items believed to have been used to steal car rims from this raid,” he said during a press conference here on Tuesday (Aug 4).
A fourth suspect, believed to be the buyer of those stolen rims, was arrested from a metal storage premise at Kg Buit Hill, Penampang.
Supt Syed Lot said 21 units of rims, among other things, were seized from the location.
With the arrest, police were led to their last location at Taman Pantai Lok Kawi, Papar, where two vehicles, also believed stolen, were confiscated.
He said all four men are remanded to facilitate probes under Section 379A(1) of the Penal Code for theft of a motor vehicle or any parts of a motor vehicle.
“We have closed 10 cases of rim thefts reported in Tanjong Aru, Luyang, Inanam, Karambunai and Menggatal with these arrests,” Supt Syed Lot said.
He said all suspects were found to hold previous conviction records for crime and drug abuse.
